The new year is opening with a solo exhibit of ten of my new paintings at Rhea Chiles’s Studio at Gulf and Pine, in Anna Maria, Florida. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 1 to 5, and this exhibit will run through January 28.

An additional painting, “Reverie,” was to be included in the exhibit. However, it was bought on the day the show went up, while I was still carrying the paintings from my car into the gallery. “Reverie” can be seen on my home page. It now has a lovely new home, in Virginia.

One Good Moment Wins a Ribbon in Sarasota

On July 31, 2011, I submitted my newly completed painting, One Good Moment, to the “Dog Days Juried Art Show” at Art Uptown, on Main Street in Sarasota.

It was awarded second place, which earned it a position in the front window of the gallery for two weeks.

The exhibit runs from August 2 through August 25, 2011, with a reception on Friday, August 12, from 6 to 9 pm.

In summer, 2010, my painting Blue Rookery received the third-place ribbon in the Art Uptown summer exhibit.

Beach Paths Encore

The Beach Paths Series Returns to The Studio at Gulf and Pine for Early Summer, 2011

Summer at the top end of Anna Maria Island started with a festive celebration of the 100-year anniversary of the City Pier. For that occasion, Tommy Fagen, manager of The Studio at Gulf and Pine, invited me to exhibit my original Beach Paths collage series, which now numbers seven, since Beach Path IV sold.

The Beach Paths series was first presented at the Studio by gallery owner Rhea Chiles, former first lady of Florida, in January, 2010. Mrs. Chiles’s elegant gallery is surrounded by native island plantings, and sits just a block from the beach, making it a most appropriate setting in which to view these collages.

Shown with the collages were my more recent and realistic acrylic paintings of two of the island’s most popular beach paths: White Avenue and Bean Point. For information about viewing these pieces, including the Studio’s limited summer hours, please phone 941-778-1906.

Palmetto Art Center Exhibition

An exhibit of 16 of my recent paintings was presented by Gretchen Leclezio in the West Studio gallery of Palmetto Art Center, from April 1 through 26, 2011. The paintings came mostly from the Offshore series, but several earlier pieces were included to indicate the way the work has progressed in the past couple of years. Starting with the intimacy of my collage series of Beach Paths, then moving onto the wide-open beach, with acrylic paintings on canvas, I explored shores and shorelines. Most recently, my perspective moved from the beach out onto the water, with the Offshore series that was presented by the Studio at Gulf and Pine, in January, 2011. The Palmetto Art Center is a fresh, vibrant gallery and community center that aims to serve all the communities of Manatee County, including Bradenton, Anna Maria Island’s three cities, Palmetto, Parrish, Ellenton, and Lakewood Ranch. A wide range of creative activities is offered, and the art is beautifully presented. The galleries are open on weekdays from 10 to 2, but closed on Wednesdays. “Offshore” Presented by the Studio at Gulf and Pine

The most recent of my acrylic paintings of shorelines have been based on viewpoints from out on the water. This series also includes suggestions of marine wildlife, distant horizons, and a heightened appreciation of the beauty of the Gulf, in the face of the devastation caused by the BP oil disaster.

I started the Offshore series a month before the BP oil disaster. Having previously painted intimate beach paths and expansive beaches, I naturally had moved my imaginary observation point out to sea. On the day the oil well exploded, the whiteness of the sand and clearness of the waters in the paintings I had completed suddenly seemed all the more precious and important. Many more paintings followed.

“Offshore” was presented from January 14 through February 3, 2011, at The Studio at Gulf and Pine, in Anna Maria, Florida. Located at the top end of Anna Maria Island, this elegant gallery is owned by former first lady of Florida Rhea Chiles.

Offshore

The paintings of Offshore include suggestions of unspoiled shorelines and marine wildlife, as seen from out on the water. They come from memories of windsurfing and boating in places ranging from the Outer Banks to New Zealand.

The smaller painting titled Offshore, the larger Pristine, and several others had been completed in spring, 2010, before the BP oil accident occurred in the Gulf. Suddenly, the white sand on the beaches of these paintings seemed vulnerable. The wildlife of the Gulf was threatened. An increased appreciation of the beauty and fragility of the marine environment influenced the paintings that followed.

“Shorelines” Presented At Sarasota Orchestra Gallery

I am pleased to have been selected by the Sarasota Orchestra to be the first artist whose work will be shown in the orchestra’s Harmony Gallery during the 2010-2011 season. My recent large acrylic paintings on canvas will be presented in a solo exhibit from September 15 through October 25, with a public reception on October 5 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Harmony Gallery is located the atrium of the Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center at 709 North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, between Art Center Sarasota and the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. It is the brainchild of Artistic Director Leif Bjaland, who believes there is great power in the collaboration of the visual and performing arts.

The Gallery and exhibition are free and open to the public from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, as well as during concerts and other special events that take place in the Symphony Center’s Holley Hall.

My series of eight mixed-media collages called Beach Paths and some of the larger acrylic paintings were shown last winter at the Studio at Gulf and Pine, in Anna Maria. The current Harmony Gallery exhibit, “Shorelines,” looks at the coast from a variety of perspectives. In January, 2011, through newer work, my perspective will move completely out onto the water, in an exhibit titled “Offshore,” at the Studio at Gulf and Pine.

Without my planning it, the point of view in my painting has progressed in a natural way, starting with the intimate, vegetated beach paths, emerging onto the wide open beach, and then moving out onto the water.

Shorelines

I try to express the feeling of infinite distance as I look at land, water and sky from different perspectives. Often I place the horizon line near the top of the canvas, to make it feel far away. Sometimes I zoom in, placing the line near the bottom, so we are looking at a forest that grows from the line and fills the rest of the canvas. In other pieces, I pull so far away that I imagine I’m painting the horizon of a planet seen from outer space. I see infinity whether I’m looking out or in. There seems to be no end to how far we can go with either a telescope or a microscope.

Whatever the perspective, there are no boundaries in these paintings except those of the natural world. This is why I choose not to frame them. The beach, vegetation, water and skies wrap around the sides of the stretched canvas and the implication is that they keep going from there.
